Senator Inhofe acts his shoe size regarding COP15

Posted by: Alex Bea | November 30, 2009

When I was a kid sharing a bedroom with my brother, we both refused to move into the extra bedroom so that the other would not have the bigger room. We were stubborn and vindictive, but at least we weren't using taxpayer money in doing so. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe (R). In an interview published in the New York Times, Inhofe gives voice to the true spirit of partisan bickering.

Our reaction to Obama's trip to Copenhagen

Posted by: Luis Hestres | November 25, 2009

barack-obama-portrait-200px.jpg

Hot off the virtual presses, here's our official reaction to today's news regarding President Obama's upcoming trip to Copenhagen:

1Sky is very pleased to learn that President Obama will be attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen and sees the trip as yet another indication that he is the most engaged president ever on this issue. His attendance will show to the rest of the world that the United States is serious about fighting climate change and will provide a real boost to a process that is so critical to our planet and people. President Obama can use his international prestige to move other nations toward signing a legally binding treaty with strong short term cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

Guest blog: 1Sky's Make-Art-For-Climate project

Posted by: Alex Bea | November 25, 2009

Over the last several weeks it has been amazing seeing all the photos coming in from 1Sky suppporters all over the country participating in Make Art for Climate events. People of all ages have been hard at work having lots of fun taking action to urge President Obama to lead in the climate fight. One such example is Chris Savage in Michigan. He wrote this post about it on his blog, Eclectablog. – Alex

I have spent quite a bit of time volunteering for the 1Sky Campaign through our local Michigan affiliate, Clean Water Action. 1Sky is a well-funded coalition of environmental groups promoting three major intiatives known as "1Sky Solutions": 5 million new green energy jobs, reducing global warming pollution and a moratorium on new coal plants.

This past month they've been promoting a fun project called Make Art For Climate.

DC Hill Update 11/23: Senate Climate Bill Scheduled to Pass by "Early Spring"

Posted by: Jason Kowalski | November 24, 2009

US Capitol small

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senator John Kerry (D-MA) announced last week that the window for moving a climate bill onto the Senate floor has moved into early 2010, as the battle to pass health care reform (see below) and financial regulatory reform spills over into the new year. With multiple plans for climate action emerging from the Senate, 1Sky is continuing to urge the president and Senate leaders to lead on passing a strong bill and protect key provisions already included in committee-passed legislation.

WaPo's editorial board joins the push on Obama

Posted by: Alex Bea | November 19, 2009

Washington Post building 200px

Hearing that President Obama should "lead on climate now" is far from unusual within the environmental community. We at 1Sky have our petition for the President to "step up on climate" and other environmental groups have blog posts, petitions, or other campaign statements saying generally the same thing. It's a different story when one of the most-read newspapers in the country, if not the world, expresses that kind of urgency.

Fighting global climate change in the name of public health

Posted by: Stefanie Zaenker | November 19, 2009

HCWH-NYT-ad-200px.jpg

Evidence of the collaborative efforts between climate change and health care advocates just got stronger. Yesterday, health care organizations across the nation, including 1Sky partner Health Care Without Harm, placed a full page ad in yesterday’s issue of the New York Times (.pdf -- image below) calling on President Obama to deliver a ‘prescription for a healthy planet’ in the upcoming Copenhagen negotiations and subsequent talks. These health industry groups announced their prescriptions for effective climate change negotiations and explained how protecting the climate is imperative to maintaining public health.
