Music to our ears: Obama, Gore and Biden meet in Chicago and promise green jobs and climate action

So nice to hear the President-elect say what we know to be true: “climate change is a matter of urgency.” Anyone else can say it, but it sounds better and means ever so much more when the President-elect says it.

Obama commented yesterday without revealing all of the details of his meeting with climate hero, Nobel Prize winner Al Gore.  According to Reuters, Obama promised once again that he would adopt an aggressive approach to global warming when he takes over the White House on January 20. Another good sign is that Vice President-elect Joe Biden also attended yesterday’s two hour meeting with Gore in Chicago.

"All three of us are in agreement that the time for delay is over, the time for denial is over," Obama said.

Like so many world wide, I cannot wait until President Bush leaves office if only because of his inaction on the climate issue and his preference for oil power over the power of solar, wind and people.

Speaking of people power, we at 1Sky and our friends and allies will have the President’s back when he needs it, and are standing by ready to be sure he can make good on his most ambitious campaign pledges when it comes to climate. When Obama needs the political muscle to make the tough decisions to spend on green jobs or make deep cuts in emissions the near term as well as the long term, we will be there with all of our supporters around the country to urge the support he will need from the Congress. We have been clear about the opportunity and the scale of the challenges, and we are pushing with for the 1Sky solutions: no more dirty coal plants, smart renewable energy, cut emissions 80 percent by 2050 and at least 25 percent by 2020, and generate at least five million new green jobs by repowering America and through a massive conservation and efficiency wave in this country.

And, we are clear about how we will get there. We are building a network of volunteer Climate Precinct Captains who will work to build the political will to make the hard decisions to do the right thing on climate.

The beauty of this moment is that it is clear that the President and Vice President-elect see clearly the challenge and the opportunity before us when it comes to climate.

If you have not signed up to join the 1Sky campaign, please do. We need Climate Precinct Captains and donors to build the machine to match the lobbying and disinformation campaign coming from big oil and dirty coal. We need you to recruit your churches and synagogues to help. The President-elect, the Vice President-elect, and the former Vice President understand what is needed. Now we need to help them make it happen. We need to be the wind at their back when they call for bold solutions. Join us. Because we have One Climate, One Future and One Chance.
