Become a Climate Precinct Captain today!

Today, hundreds of climate activists will be taking the next step forward in climate leadership by signing up as Climate Precinct Captains. Here at headquarters and in various states, our organizers are gearing up to work with these leaders across the country. Join hundreds of other committed climate advocates nationally as a Climate Precinct Captain today!

This past weekend, we witnessed an amazing victory: as a stand-alone measure, the investments in a green economy brought about through the American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act would amount to the biggest energy bill in history. However, this is only the first step of many to solve the climate challenge and build a clean economy.

As a movement, we have approximately one month to influence the climate bill being drafted before it gets debated in Congress. After that, we will essentially be rallying behind a bill and trying to get as many members of Congress to support it as we can and get it passed this year. From February 27th to March 2nd, 10,000 people are going to be rallying in DC for a clean energy future at Power Shift 09, culminating in the largest climate lobby ever held. We need to be base-building and carrying the energy and power of 10,000 folks gathering in DC to our own communities and our own Congress members.

That’s why the very first thing we’re urging Climate Precinct Captains to do is to gather 100 Power Shift petition signatures on Saturday, February 28th or Sunday, March 1st. This petition is aligned with what Members of Congress will receive during the March 2nd lobby day in DC. The goal is to build a list that will send a powerful message to Congress, and also can serve as people you call upon to take action with you later on.

Following this action, Climate Precinct Captains will engage these folks in meetings and upcoming actions, which we’ll keep sending your way.

Just remember, the time for action is now. We have not a day to lose to change the course of history and pass the nation’s first comprehensive climate bill by next winter, when we’ll enter the international arena at the Copenhagen climate negotiations. Sign up at http://local.1sky.org to get involved today and join a debrief conference call on Thursday, March 5th at 7 pm EST: 218-936-7999, passcode 132709. And e-mail local@1sky.org or call 301-270-4550, ext 222 with any questions.
