Breaking: Obama's EPA set to block new coal plants
Today, President Obama's EPA took a solid first step to limit the construction of new coal plants. Years ago, carbon, or CO2, was categorized as a "dangerous pollutant" by the Supreme Court in "Massachusetts vs. EPA." Just months ago, litigation from our friends at the Sierra Club resulted in a complete halt to new coal plant construction.
That victory was initially thwarted by an unlawful memo from Bush's EPA Administrator Steven Johnson, but thanks to sustained efforts by our friends at the Sierra Club and Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), the unlawful Bush-era memo has been overturned by the Obama administration, and the permitting process for new coal plants has been halted once again.
The question remains, where do we go from here? President Obama has successfully halted the permitting process for new dirty coal plants, but there are still dozens left in some stage of construction being fought across the country. Of course, the coal industry is not giving up without a fight. As the New York Times explained in a story recently, our leaders must ask the question, are we willing to quit coal? And the response must be a loud YES from a broad cross-section of the American people.
Want to join the chorus? Here's how: you can organize your friends and neighbors by becoming a Climate Precinct Captain, and take your voice straight to Congress. We've got a strong ally in the White House, but he needs all the help we can muster to battle the coal industry. Claim your precinct today!
