IPCC Scientist John Fyfe: Live Blog from National Teach-In

In case you missed the live 1Sky Twitter updates, here are some of my notes from the lecture of John Fyfe, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scientist.

7:35 PM— John Fyfe, senior research scientist for the Canadian Centre for Climate Modeling and Analysis, presenting the “The Science of Global Climate Change" at Whitman College.

7:40 PM—You know Fyfe is green--he just accepted a student's water bottle instead of using the typical Dasani...nope just got a Dasani....and just got another cup of water. Walla Walla, the city of many waters, is really living up to its name!

7:43 PM—Key Messages from the IPCC WGI report:

  • the climate has warmed, will continue to warm, and humans are the cause.
  • mitigation will not substantially affect the climate over the next few decades.
  • but choices made now will have a big impact on the late 21st century climate.

7:48 PM—Vostok Ice Core—Fyfe, "We're not only facing an absolute warming but a warming that has been accelerating over time."

7:51 PM—IPCC has seen an explosion of new data--oceans are warming, glaciers are retreating, ice sheet are melting, sea levels are rising, and sea ice is melting.

Sea-ice is melting: ice level dropping precipitously--Fyfe: "the single biggest issue before the collapse of the economy in Canada was sea ice dropping!"

7:54 PM—Super computers powered by nuclear reactors to crunch climate data?

8:00 PM—Fyfe, "we know the frequency of warm nights, heat waves, drought, & intense tropical cyclones are all increasing globally."

IPCC scientists expect heavier precipitation, more drought, heat waves, expect more frost waves.

8:04 PM—What do we expect for the future...? Fyfe, "It does make a difference which scenario we take but we are likely to see a temperature rise anywhere from 1-4 degrees C."
