Help Obama strengthen his 2020 emissions reduction targets
Last week we asked you help President Obama strengthen his 2020 CO2 pollution reduction targets--and your response has been amazing. Over 9,500 of you sent messages to the White House pledging grassroots support for stronger 2020 targets. Help us get to 10,000 messages--send your own letter to Obama today!
In the face of accelerating global warming, the president has proposed a return to 1990 pollution levels by 2020. Unfortunately, that will not be enough to avoid exceeding a 2°C temperature increase over pre-industrial levels that would result in catastrophic climate change. Obama's target would be a significant reduction, but not nearly enough or quickly enough.
Why hasn't Obama strengthened his target? After all, he has made global warming a top priority and said his decisions will be grounded in science. A recent speech from Obama's top climate negotiator provides the answer. Speaking about the 2020 target, Todd Stern, Special Envoy for Climate Change, said:
...at the same time we are being guided by the science and doing the math, we cannot forget that we are engaged in a political process and that politics, in the classic formulation, is the art of the possible.
President Obama is concerned there isn't enough political support for the strong pollution reductions that are needed. It's up to us to show that there is political support for stronger 2020 targets. Obama and congressional leaders need to know we'll provide the grassroots support that will make stronger pollution reduction targets possible. Let's get to 10,000 messages--send Obama your message today!
