Meet with your members of Congress in April

Posted by: Liz Butler | March 18, 2009

The April congressional recess is coming up soon, and there's no better time to lobby your members of Congress for a strong climate bill this year. Please sign up today to organize a meeting with your members of Congress in April.

The coming weeks will be decisive in our push for bold climate action before the end of this year. President Obama has called for legislation to cap global warming pollution, and congressional leaders are already working on a draft bill. We expect the House version to go through a committee vote by Memorial Day and the Senate to debate a bill later this summer. This means that we have just 9 weeks to shape one of the most critical pieces of the puzzle to solve the climate challenge. There's no time to waste--and that's where you come in.

Next month, your representative and senators will be back home in your state and district for their two-week April recess. This is your best chance to meet with them and urge them to support a bill with strong caps on carbon pollution.

Please sign up today to organize a meeting with your members of Congress in April. After you sign up, we'll send you directions on how to set up your meeting, download your lobby packet, and confirm your meetings with our political team. Please set up your meetings as soon as possible: their calendars will fill up fast before the recess!

Passing a strong climate bill in the U.S. is critical to solving the climate challenge and reviving our economy--and 2009 is our best window to do it. Without a strong commitment from the U.S. to cut carbon pollution, the rest of the world will be very reluctant to do the same at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December. Capping carbon will also create jobs by sparking investment in clean, renewable energy.

The time to shape and push for this bill is now, before King Coal and other polluters weaken it or block it altogether. The president and Congress need to know you're part of a massive grassroots movement that will back their efforts to pass a strong climate bill this year. The fierce urgency of now is stronger than ever -- set up your April meetings today!
