All eyes on the House Energy and Commerce Committee

It was a busy April! Last month, we asked 1Sky activists and our friends and allies to contact their member of Congress and we worked with Focus the Nation on turnout for clean energy town hall meetings. You came through!

Over 1,800 of you volunteered to contact your member of Congress in over 300 districts and many of you either planned a town hall meeting or attended one. We received enthusiastic feedback on the impact we are having and the House staff working behind the scenes on strong legislation tell us the members are noticing!

This year, with key environmental champions in our new President and Congress, the United States may be looking at the best chance it has ever had to take bold federal action on climate change.

The 1Sky campaign has been working with allies and key federal legislators and agencies to already help effect two encouraging developments: In Congress there is now a potentially acceptable and viable legislative proposal – the Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 – being debated; and the Obama administration’s Environmental Protection Agency has classified global warming as a health hazard and it has asserted regulatory authority to limit carbon emissions.

While we’re presently focused on strengthening the Waxman-Markey proposal as it moves through Congress, we’re also careful to explore other strategies for ensuring strong U.S. leadership at the Copenhagen Climate Conference.

April was busy, but it’s only the beginning. We will need your active involvement and support as volunteers, allies, and Climate Precinct Captains more than ever as we look ahead to Copenhagen.
