VIDEO: House passes clean energy and climate bill

Posted by: Luis Hestres | June 26, 2009

The House of Representatives just passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454) this evening by a vote of 219 to 212. This bill has narrowly passed this hurdle and we will redouble our efforts to strengthen it even more in the Senate. Watch this video for more details about what we have accomplished and where we go from here, or take a look at our press release.

It probably wouldn't be right of me to grab this woman and kiss her for all it's worth, like there's no tomorrow. I'm inappropriate, and I am so sorry :-)

Let's not celebrate too much. I have a strong feeling that the Senate opposition is going to try strip off every leaf from the tree, so hopefully it has most of its foliage left when it gets through the Senate, which it will.Congrats anyway, well done to all who helped contribute!

Let's keep on going! Thank you to all the great people who have worked so hard to get this legislation to this point. It's happening!

Props to us for keeping the pressure on. Since Big Oil and King Coal have the money advantage, we have to have the numbers advantage if we're to make any progress.

And props to Nancy Pelosi, my Congressional representative, for her hard work. She knows how to do the hard stuff and she gets it done. Woo Hoo!!

This was too close. We need a better strategy for the Senate. I suggest developing specific arguments for certain Senators and work those points. Include climate change likely in their state, job development, etc.

There is now a cap from the House, yay. But there are also way too many giveaways to the fossil fuel industry and there is a very long road ahead before GHG emissions begin to decline. There is no insurance to this bill. Please ask yourself what that insurance looks like and fight for it!

So what are the provisions of this bill? Does it really help by promoting at least 10,000 square miles of NON BULLDOZED desert solar? Or is it just a way to make us use less of the dirty stuff? Conservation is good through efficiency but it is of the devil when it is forced upon us. Actually, we shouldn't have to conserve at all (and waste money on such efforts) because much greater ambitions will be achieved by instead, focusing on the pure and simple, UNLIMITED CLEAN ENERGY!

This is the most important effort of my life because it is the most important decision we'll make for our children. Thanks to all who put in the hours and effort. I can't think of a more worthwhile endeavor. May God help us as we find our way to our greater angels.

As a strategy note, I'd stop saying dirty coal and oil. We need to recognize that we are all in this together. We all use the stuff. We're either all dirty or all trying to clean up. I believe we don't stand a chance of preserving life on earth if we continue to think of this as us against them. We're all going to figure out how to work together or we'll go down separately.

We're in a race of our lifetimes with the climate. Who will win depends on the simple sociological truth: will the greater or lesser angels in each of us prevail?

Still SO much work to be done - this vote was close; the Senate + Big Oil will attempt to block all the work that has been done thus far.
Unfortunately, I live in one of those Big Oil states, so I'll have to hold my Senators' feet to the proverbial fire!
God Bless Us, Each & Every One - maybe this time, not too many blessings to those who oppose this bill - BIG, NASTY OIL COMPANIES. Guess that was a tad too bombastic..........Ah well, if there were a time to be bombastic, this is one of them.

Gillian is right that we have our work cut out for us. If we are as willing to compromise in the Senate as we were in the House, those of us in coal country will suffer tremendously as the rest of you falsely celebrate a pyrrhic victory that sentences us to more coal and more death. Be careful what you wish for.

I wish complete success in the passing of this long overdue piece of landmark legislation as our lives and generations to come need clean air to breathe and water to drink if we are to survive. Anyone who cannot see the logic here is destroying their own future.

Great news, but still much work to be done, especially here in Kansas where both State Houses gave the OK to Sunflower Electric to build a massive filthy coal burning plant in Holcomb, Kansas. Former Gov. Sebilius vetoed building the plants, but new Gov. approved. Help 1Sky!

Nice job punishing the working poor. The only thing certain about this pork-laden bill (300 pages added just hours before the vote) is how it will dramatically increase the cost of energy -- no biggie to elitists, but a huge blow to the average family. And with, at best, very questionable positive environmental impact.
