Van Jones Resigns

Posted by: Gillian Caldwell | September 6, 2009

Van Jones, the White House's top advisor on Green Jobs, resigned this morning in the wake of a focused campaign by the right wing to unseat him. In all the stories swirling around Glenn Beck/Fox's smear campaign on my long time friend and colleague Van Jones, I hardly recognized who they were talking about.

You'd never know the "raging communist" they were scalping was in fact a Yale-educated attorney, best-selling author, and one of the most strategic minds in contemporary politics. Or that he has been fighting for a lifetime to try and improve the world around him - most recently by pushing for green jobs and pathways out of poverty for millions of people around this country of ours, which is staggering under the weight of an economy built on dirty coal and big oil.

I, for one, am relieved that even more people around the country are about to get to know a remarkable man and a remarkable mind; and while others throughout the environmental movement lament his resignation, I am excited about the opportunity it presents for us to move this climate and energy bill and our country forward. But I am also deeply disturbed about what Fox's apparent victory means for the future of President Obama's administration and cadre of talented advisors.

What does this mean? Three things for sure:

1. More lynchings - Van's is just the first scalp and they wont stop there. But what they didn't bet on is that he can and will be even more effective on the outside than he was able to be on the inside -- particularly now that they have launched him to a position of national prominence and interest with this lynching. As others have pointed out, Van's resignation could mean it will be impossible for outspoken progressives to work in the White House, which would be a very bad result for the country.

2. More trouble for Fox News and Glenn Beck - hopefully lots more. Color of Change mounted a successful campaign urging advertisers to boycott Fox news as result of Glenn Beck's racist remarks -- and 57 advertisers have agreed to work on getting their ads off the show since Glenn Beck called President Obama a "racist" who "has a deep-seated hatred for white people" during an appearance on Fox & Friends a month ago.

3. Bigger and better things from Van Jones - a remarkable, dedicated and strategic changemaker who is about to hit his stride.

It is amazing that the Obama administration caved in and didn't support Van Jones!

I was also sad this morning, but agree with Gillian, Fox and the right made a big mistake. He will be vastly more effective in helping to organize for Green Job's Now, community-by-community and not be stuck in the bureaucratic morass of Washington, DC.

Let's fire up our communities to action, Green Job's Action Summit @ Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, California, 25th of September, I'm inviting Van to San Luis Obispo, since he's not working now. This will be a Tri-County effort, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.

One thing for sure with Van Jones pushing for green energy jobs, we have 9.7% unemployment rate, he have just them many supporters or more. How many do Glenn Beck have?

Nobody is as good at being malicious and mean spirited as some in the far right, and we should not want to pollute our world or ourselves by matching those bad vibes. If there are no other lessons from the past few months a reoccurring theme might be to be very careful what you say, even among people you feel connections to and even if you are partly trying to be funny while making a point. I'm not intending to diminish the man or the loss, we all say things we wish we could stuff back inside our mouths. Rather, I am looking forward. As important as green jobs are, I would like to see a slightly less social work focus on environment in the white house going forward. I hope this organization and others will help find a suitable voice to join the white house team.

Glenn Beck is a hateful, racist, right wing nut who should be dragged through the streets. SOB has no more idea what is good for this country than any of the rest of the polluting bastards!

The right-wing in the United States will stop at nothing to derail comprehensive energy and climate legislation. Van Jones' resignation is the most recent example. This is a somber day for anybody who cares about the future of human civilization. Will this cave-in from the Obama administration just be foreshadowing a complete cave-in on energy reform? I hope not, but "hope" thus far has not resulted in "change."

The environmental movement's prime directive of always being positive threatens to make you irrelevant. The appropriate reaction here is outrage. Such emotions have their place, and constantly trying to deny them is not healthy.

By working within a system that is clearly stacked against us, we are failing in our quest for a livable future. When, Gillian, will you realize the power you have and start telling people that we need to fight back?

You have got to be kidding me . . .right? Have you heard the hate come from this mans mouth? Progressive is one thing, spewing hatred is something totally different and it's no good for this country to have someone in government service who has the ideals and hatred for the country as this man has. He may have great ideas concerning the green movement and that is fine and dandy but he is going to have to show he loves this country and not talk hate about it to serve in government for my taste. At least if he would have come out and spoken on his communist connections and the things he has said in the past and told what his views are today, and how and why he changed it may have helped. Unfortunately he has not changed, some of his comments were made in the past few months, and yes, he did apologize for some, but far from all; and far from enough to explain his actions in the past. Oh, it was in the past and so let bygones be bygones? Not unless there has been a fundamental change in his actions, and up until a few months ago he has done nothing but the same.
Sorry, as good as he might be for the green movement I for one cant accept the rest of it, good riddence to the man.

No one who meets Van Jones comes away with any impression other than that he is one of the most impressive human beings of his generation. What is most appalling -- though not surprising -- in this current drama, is that the mainstream media -- some of whose representatives have surely had time to get to know Van -- have accepted the Beck version without reservation. One can only be reminded of the last twenty minutes of "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington", when the Taylor machine delivers thousands of telegrams denouncing Jefferson Smith as a criminal. Too bad Van doesn't have a chance for his own filibuster right now -- after two hours of hearing him speak, most Americans would elect him to the Senate...

I agree that Van was basically lynched. Folks like Glen Beck are very frightened that black men have gained power in D.C. and will be dangerously emboldened by this "victory."

As a white man in a mid-western state, I pledge to talk about the insidious racial currents in many of the right-wing attacks on our President and his staff.

It made me really sad to read about this this morning. It was clear that they had someone whose full time job was digging up dirt on Van Jones. However, I like Gillian's perspective and feel that while this means very bad things for the White House and future precedent, Van Jones is a man who will not be set back and will find ways to do great things.

I don't think Glenn Beck understands the war he has started.
