Worth repeating: Senator Bennet will stand up for the Clean Air Act

Last week, more than 50 1Sky supporters 'stormed' Senator Michael Bennet's office in Denver, Colorado encouraging him to be more vocal in defense of the Clean Air Act. Following this event, a spokesperson for Senator Bennet told reporters that Bennet will "strongly oppose efforts to gut the Clean Air Act" in an article published in the New York Times this week. Said the spokesperson:

"The Clean Air Act is one of our nation's strongest and most effective pieces of legislation, and for 40 years we have seen that protecting the air we breathe does not have to come at a cost to the national economy -- both can improve hand-in-hand,”

At the Denver event, staff confirmed that Senator Bennet will stand with 1Sky to fight big polluters' efforts to gut the Clean Air Act in the Senate climate bill, as well as stand-alone proposals authored by Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV).

1Sky Colorado Organizer Micah Parkin helped coordinate the Denver event. She and the other participants from ten different allied organizations were thrilled by Senator Bennet’s public commitments. “The event was a success. We were pleased by the attendance and the positive response we received,” Parkin told the Colorado Independent for a story about the storm.

Clearly, Senator Bennet understands that now is the time to stand up for the clean energy economy. Now is the time to send a strong signal to high-growth clean energy businesses so they can expand and begin hiring thousands of new workers. Building a clean energy economy will require a combination of incentives, like the more ambitious Renewable Energy Standard (RES) Bennett has already supported, and Clean Air Act performance standards that will reduce emissions from the biggest dirtiest polluters, therefore leveling the playing field to make renewable energy more competitive. A strong Clean Air Act is what Colorado businesses want, and what Colorado families deserve.

In a political climate where some politicians facing close elections are veering away from "tough" issues, Senator Bennet is standing strong in support of a clean energy future. If you are from Colorado we encourage you to call Senator Bennet's DC office and thank him for defending the Clean Air Act: 202-224-5852.
