A horrific tragedy in Tucson

A horrific tragedy in Tucson

Like all of you, I was shocked and angered by what happened this weekend in Arizona. The attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), along with the senseless shooting of 19 other victims -- including the murder a federal judge, a congressional aide, a nine-year-old-girl and three other Arizonians -- is a tragedy that cuts deeply on many levels. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims of this tragedy and their families.

Rep. Giffords is a tireless public servant who has fought for measures that would cut climate pollution and create clean energy jobs for millions of Americans, including her constituents in Arizona. Fortunately, Rep. Giffords seems to be responding well to treatment. We hope she'll recover quickly and return to the public arena to keep fighting for a clean energy future as soon as possible.

We don't know all the facts about the motivations behind this rampage, but one thing is clear: no public servant should ever fear violence when meeting with her constituents, and none of us should ever fear meeting with our representatives. Regardless of motivation, violence has no place in our politics -- period. We must all work together to make sure this type of violence doesn't occur again.

President Obama called on all Americans to observe a moment of silence today for the victims of the Tucson shooting. I urge you to join the President's call to observe this moment of silence.
