Mr. President: Defend the Clean Air Act in your State of the Union address

This is it, Mr. President. The Clean Air Act is under attack and we need your help to defend it. We've compromised on a lot in the last two years, but this is our last defense: This is one piece of legislation that cannot be led to the chopping block.

Over at Salon, Michelle Fitzsimmons phrased it like this:
With the repeal of "ObamaCare" under their belts, House Republicans have their eye and axe set on another bastion of liberal policy-making: the Clean Air Act of 1970.

If our opponents have started a rallying cry, now is our time to respond: and we expect you to sound the alarm right along with us. You wrote recently in the Wall Street Journal that reining in regulation could create jobs, but you specifically exempted the Clean Air Act because it is a prime example of regulation at its best: it protects the health of American families without overburdening job creators.

We need more than an exemption: we need leadership. We need you to talk about the Clean Air Act and climate change, and the effect they have on everyday folks like us. We need you to talk about the millions of clean energy jobs that will be lost if the Clean Air Act is overturned. Most importantly, we need you to tell dirty energy industries that they cannot buy the death of the Clean Air Act with campaign expenditures.

Last week, a group of 23 environmental and climate groups -- including 1Sky -- signed a joint letter asking for you to address this issue in the State of the Union. These groups may have some differences here and there, but on this point, we all agree.

So please, take the opportunity Tuesday night to stand up in your State of the Union speech and talk about why the Clean Air Act matters. We'll all be watching.
