As we stood outside Rep. Mark Schauer's office (MI-7th) in the bright spring sunshine holding signs reading "A storm of support: Thank you for protecting the Clean Air Act" and "Mark Schauer brings clean energy power," I couldn't help but recall my first visit to his office just days before the American Clean Energy and Security (ACES) act vote. Rep. Schauer was a first-term Congressman whom Clean Water Action (my organization in Michigan), had worked hard to get into office based on his strong environmental platform. After a productive discussion of why the ACES bill was so important for Michigan's economic and environmental future, we received a call on the day of the vote from his office assuring us that he would be supporting the bill.

On Wednesday, 1Sky, 10 allied organizations, and more than 50 activists politely “stormed” Senator Michael Bennet’s Denver office to urge him to fight back against congressional efforts to gut the Clean Air Act. Representatives of the groups stated their concerns and urged Senator Bennet to make a public commitment to fight to defend and uphold the Clean Air Act, delivering a poster-sized joint request letter signed by all of "The Storm" participants and group leaders.

Yes-Men-Fix-The-World_200px

This week's round-up features climate news from across the spectrum. Politically, the Obama administration announced both good and bad news. Economically, it looks like clean energy holds great hope for our Irish friends as well. Scientifically, a finding was released regarding the scientists attacked by climate skeptic hackers last fall. And in the world of April Fools, the ultimate eco-hoaxters released a video of their greatest hits.

Minnesota experienced an incredibly rare occurrence this year: for the first time in over 100 years, it has not snowed in the month of March. While other parts of the country are experiencing damaging snows and torrential rains, we have seen the other side of the coin. We can’t necessarily attribute this to climate change but it certainly has been on the minds of many across Minnesota.

It was against this backdrop that a group of dedicated activists showed up last Monday (3/29) on an unusually beautiful day at Rep. Tim Walz’s office in Mankato, Minnesota. They were there to thank him for his vote last year on the American Clean Energy and Security (ACES) Act; the only comprehensive climate and energy bill to pass either body of Congress. (See pictures from the event below.)

With Congress on recess, this week was marked by big news from the Obama Administration, including a disappointing announcement about offshore oil drilling and a more encouraging one about mountaintop removal coal mining. Meanwhile, 1Sky supporters turned out in impressive numbers to "storm" in-state Congressional offices nationwide, demanding that members of Congress oppose the "Dirty Air Act" proposals currently under consideration.

Last week, more than 50 1Sky supporters 'stormed' Senator Michael Bennet's office in Denver, Colorado encouraging him to be more vocal in defense of the Clean Air Act. Following this event, a spokesperson for Senator Bennet told reporters that Bennet will "strongly oppose efforts to gut the Clean Air Act" in an article published in the New York Times this week. Said the spokesperson:

This week’s roundup features both positive and negative news on the climate front. Our campaign director Gillian Caldwell was recently interviewed by Dowser while our ally the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) sent a climatologist to defend the latest science on the Colbert Report. Globally, the UN is beginning to plan another climate conference to find a global solution for climate change.

DC Hill Update 4/12/2010: Senate gears up for climate bill release

During the second and final week of congressional recess, White House officials dominated climate news with strong affirmations that comprehensive climate and energy legislation is a top priority for the Obama administration this year. A number of devastating fossil-fuel-related disasters -- including a deadly explosion at a West Virginia coal mine that killed 29 workers -- dominated the news last week, highlighting yet another reason to move away from dirty fossil energy and toward safer and cleaner energy sources. 1Sky supporters continued to make news as they "stormed" congressional offices to defend the Clean Air Act from recent legislative attacks. This week, the Senate is back in session and poised for the introduction of a comprehensive climate and energy bill during the week of April 19-23.
