27th Annual COASTAL CLEANUP DAY Saturday, September 17, 2011 9AM to noon, Countywide Save the date for the 27th annual Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD)! Co-coordinated by I Love A Clean San Diego and San Diego Coastkeeper, CCD features over 80 inland and coastal sites throughout the county. Last year, volunteer participation in the cleanup effort rose to more than 10,000 participants locally, with another 2,000 volunteers lending their support across the border in the U.S.-Mexico shared Tijuana Watershed. Volunteers removed close to 100 tons of debris from more than 80 cleanup sites along the coastline and in canyons, creek beds, lagoons, estuaries and open spaces. This is the largest volunteer event in San Diego County in support of the marine environment, and part of the International Coastal Cleanup, which involves over 150 countries and 9 million volunteers. It is the only large scale event that includes data collection, which will help to influence public policy related to marine debris. In an effort to emphasize pollution prevention and waste reduction, we encourage volunteers to bring their own buckets and gloves to the cleanup. We will also have some cleanup supplies on-site for volunteer use. Please visit www.cleanupday.org for more information. Volunteer registration opens on the event website in mid-August. Companies interested in sponsorship or providing a team of 25 volunteers or more, or individuals interested in becoming a site captain should contact Natalie Roberts at nroberts@cleansd.org or 619-704-2773.
