Murkowski attack on Clean Air Act losing steam -- for now

Last week, thousands of 1Sky activists from all 50 states picked up their phones to tell their senators to stop Senator Murkowski's (R-AK) unwarranted attack on the Clean Air Act. Thanks to your help, Senator Murkowski's assault on clean air is losing steam, but this fight is far from over. We need to keep the pressure on so that senators know these rollbacks are unacceptable.

Senator Murkowski initially planned on forcing a vote on her "Dirty Air Act" right away, but in light of grassroots pressure, she is instead offering up a formal "resolution" to block the Clean Air Act, to be voted on at a later time. This attack on the Clean Air Act would put public health at risk and jeopardize long-overdue action to hold the biggest polluters accountable, reduce America’s oil dependence, and jump-start a vibrant clean energy economy. Luckily, the public isn't buying Murkowski's political stunt. Her home state paper, The Anchorage Daily News, connects the dots between Murkowski's campaign contributions and this anti-clean energy legislation written directly by utility lobbyists:

According to research by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), Sen. Murkowski has received at least $126,500 from the clients, clients' employees, and the lobbying firm that employs Mr. Holmstead since 2004. Overall, electric utilities are Sen. Murkowski's biggest corporate campaign contributors, adding $244,000 to her election efforts since 2005. During the current 2009-2010 election cycle, Sen. Murkowski has received more electric utility money than any other lawmaker.

We need to tell members of Congress that the way to win reelection is to tell us what they're doing to create clean energy jobs and reduce global warming pollution, not scrapping some of the most effective clean air legislation in America's history on account of big industry lobbyists. Take a minute today and tell your Senators to vote NO on Murkowski's Dirty Air Act, and get to work on strong climate and energy legislation.
