Takoma Park, MD – Former Vice President Al Gore is expected to urge Senators to take courageous comprehensive action to fight climate change at a hearing today in the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Gillian Caldwell, the campaign director of 1Sky commended Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for asking Vice President Gore to testify.  Caldwell called Gore, “the leading voice of conscience on the climate crisis.” Caldwell described the Foreign Relations Committee hearing an appropriate kick-off for this challenging legislative session.

Caldwell urged Senators to adopt the 1Sky solutions to global warming when they are drafting legislation to promote clean energy and reduce global warming pollution. Caldwell said, “There is a growing consensus around these bold solutions to the climate crisis, based on the best science available: Create 5 million green jobs. Cut carbon pollution by at least 35% by 2020, and by 80% by 2050. Stop all construction of new coal plants, and repower America on renewable energy.”

She said that there are three main legislative vehicles that are expected to move this year to transform America’s economy to a cleaner, brighter future: The economic recovery package, the climate change legislation and the energy bill. “This year will be one of hard work for everyone who cares about repowering America and transforming our economy and our future. But we can do it by working together.”

1Sky activists have been contacting their Senators to ask for a clean and green recovery package that will create five million green jobs.
